Hey und Hallo, I'm Bettina.

I teach women, who aim for more in their career, on how to strengthen their unique positioning and create results significant to a company’s business strategy. As a result, they can attract high-quality career opportunities and negotiate a higher salary.

HOW IT ALL BEGAN

When we got back to Germany from our 5-year expat assignment to the United States, one of my biggest dreams of living and working abroad came to an end. It was the first day after months of moving, settling in, buying a car, re-open bank accounts, finding Kindergarten for the kids and all the other good stuff that I was able to take a breath.  

I went on the balcony of our apartment admiring the gorgeous view I had over the entire region.  

“What’s next?”, I thought.

I had achieved everything that had been on my “work-life-bucket-list” so far. 

  • I held a masters degree in economics with a focus on organizational development and corporate communications. 
  • I had checked off the experience I wanted to gain in talent assessment, employer branding and recruiting. 
  • I had greatly further developed my business understanding when facilitating numerous business process streamlining workshops. 
  • I had worked with decision-makers on all levels in my role as a communications expert focusing on leadership communication and personal leadership branding. 
  • On the side, I had built a career as a rock-climber travelling the world supported with a sponsorship from a Swiss outdoor company. 
  • I had realized an expat assignment for myself that I so wanted and negotiated a second career opportunity for my back-then-boyfriend so he could accompany me.
  • I got married to him on a beach in one of the most beautiful cities of the world and became a mom to two wonderful children. 
  • I founded my first business during my maternity leave in the U.S. and,
  • have mentored dozens of women in corporate careers on their positioning and career development for the past 15 years.

“Now what?”, I heard the echo in my head.

I leaned against the rail and looked at a big industrial building far on the horizon.

We had moved to a highly industrial area, but I realized just now that all those big German names like Bosch, Daimler and Porsche and even more were just a few miles down the road. “How many of the people working there were passionate about the work they do?”, I asked myself. “How many of them live up to their potential adding real value to the company? “How many of them were women in leadership positions?” I went on and on.  

Tired of the past months, I sank into a chair quickly browsing through LinkedIn. An article talking about the gender wage gap and still different opportunities of men and women made me stop. Really? For some reason I couldn’t believe it, at least not the statistics about the industrial states.

I put my phone down and reflected on my career options from the very beginning as well as my salary development. I felt; my career options were always what I wanted at the time. In fact, I had created them how I needed them to be, like a job-sharing that allowed me to train and travel as a rock-climber on my terms, a communications position that didn’t exist before and was exactly tailored to my passions, an expat assignment because I got an itchy foot, wanting to live in an English speaking country for a few years. Not only did I feel more fulfilled with the opportunities I created, I had nearly tripled my salary in a few years, realized job changes with 45% higher income, re-negotiated 25% in the same position leading to over 65% raises in less than 5 years.  

Along the way though, I learned that for many women and men around me getting a YES on their ideas at work, asking for the career options they wanted and having those conversations that lead to sealing a new opportunity, didn’t come as easy.

“So, if there is a system related wage gap of 20%, than there should not be a wage gap in professions where people can set their own price tag on their service,” I thought and browsed the internet for pages that would compare the hourly rate of freelancers, coaches and consultants. I quickly did the math. Yup, about 20% difference. I wasn’t quite ready to bust my own belief around wages yet and started interviewing numerous male decision makers and women on all levels around the world on female careers and salary development.

The answer from ALL men and ALL female recruiters I got to the wage question was quite simple. “People get what they ask for and what they continue to show to be important to them. Women simply don’t ask for it.”

One thing was for sure: THAT NEEDED TO STOP!

And I wanted to be part of this movement, helping women to negotiate careers and salaries they wanted!

Almost instantly I founded my consulting business.

  • I have since helped dozens of women go from entry position to director level, 
  • from admin to senior expert roles, 
  • negotiate up to a 75% higher salary in new positions and raises of 25%+ in the same position without any additional tasks, 
  • get promoted to the positions they wanted, 
  • get accepted to the leadership programs they long wanted to be part of,
  • do a career change into a completely different field, 
  • master interviews and performance evaluations in a way that feels natural to them and simply,
  • be a lot happier at work because they do work they feel passionate about.

And doing so, I realized how passionate I am to show even more women how they can attract and negotiate high-quality career opportunities because - we all deserve a thriving career we are passionate about.

Be Better Prepared For Your Next Salary Conversation

“$1-1.5 Million in lost earnings over a lifetime because I didn’t negotiate my initial salary, nor asked for raises later on.”  

That certainly should NOT be the story you have to tell your grandchildren years from now. AGREED?  

And yet this happens every day - especially for women!

Some facts research shows on the gender pay gap: 

Much like with any investment, your initial salary level counts. If you get 35.000 or 40.000 Dollars or Euro a year matters not only for what you have in your bank account at the end of the year, but more so, when it comes to raises, bonuses, retirement funds and other benefits that are percentage based. Due to the compounding effect, these incremental losses add up to anything between $1-1.5 million for graduates over a lifetime. Obviously this is not what we want for you.

Truth is, negotiation matters - and it does even more so for women! 

Here is why:

Research shows only 7% of female university graduates tried to negotiate an initial job offer compared to 57% of their male counterparts, which lead to a starting difference of an average of 7.4%. Over the years, that lead to significant gaps in the salary development of women. See the truth about the gender wage impact on your salary.  

But, why is that the case? After all, can we not just state the income we want to earn and negotiate the terms that feel right to us?  

Yes, absolutely! But, research also shows that women ask for way less than their male colleagues, something that I, sadly, KNOW TO BE TRUE after mentoring and working with women for more than 15 years.  

The reason is that they feel afraid to come across as pushy or demanding. And they are right! A study shows that male and female managers were less likely to work with women that negotiated during a job interview.  

The good news though is that: 89% of men and women that tried to negotiate a higher salary were successful.  

The idea of starting a conversation about your salary can definitely seem overwhelming, so let’s look into some tips on how to prepare for it. 

1. Get an idea on comparable salary levels so you are informed on where you stand.

Here are a few sources to consider:

  • Ask friends if and how they negotiated and what they asked for.
  • Reach out to your network to get an idea over a range of industries and companies.
  • Ask your mentors for their insights.
  • Recruiters are well informed on the labor market and can give you a good range.
  • Online platforms that give you a range for comparable positions.
  • Job search platforms also sometimes give a range for comparable positions.
  • Employers. Ask what the range is for someone that does a similar job as you (would) do. 

2. Know the value you have added to a company and be specific about it.

If you want to change into a new role or want to ask for a raise in your current job, here are a few questions that may help you get started to show the actual benefit you bring to the company:

  • Have you saved your company time, money, resources? If so, how much?
  • Have you added to the company’s profits by doing ________?
  • Have you exceeded the targets set by your boss? What were the measurable results for the company?
  • Did you do any projects beyond your scope of work? What was the value add for the company? 

3. Make the conversation about THEM.

A company hired or will hire you to achieve THEIR goals, not yours. Ask yourself, what you can do for them that will help them achieve their business goals.  

Here is the simple main question that will shift the entire conversation, especially if you are a woman and also have to play out gender bias:  

  • How can you help the company to gain/achieve/get/avoid/be faster/be more efficient/...


Approaching your next conversation about your salary or a raise with these three tips in mind will help you gain clarity and with that build up your confidence.

How to Use Trends For Your Career Development 

“You got to be, where the beat is,” a Senior Vice President once said to me when I asked why we needed to be forefront on every new topic headquarters was rolling out and wanted us to implement. As I was working for a big international company, headquarters was quite big and with that the amount of new initiatives seemed overwhelming at times. 

It’s true, though! It’s the trends that open up new opportunities and bring new business. Trends almost always involve change, something that a lot of people don’t really like and that exactly is YOUR OPPORTUNITY.

In fact, there are 3 different ways you can deal with trends:

  • You find or set trends yourself
  • You are forefront in testing and implementing and therefore are a significant part in making the product, service, or initiative even better.
  • You ignore trends and are overwhelmed once you have to implement by yourself, because everyone else already moved on to the next topic. 

Here is an example.

About 15 years ago, the first social media platforms got started. The majority of the world either was hesitant towards using it or didn’t have access because of internet restrictions. Today, years later, there are companies and people that embraced social media in a way that they use it as a brand awareness channel or as an additional stream of income (think of buying directly from Instagram accounts, Buy and Sell groups in Facebook, etc.) The opportunities are endless.

Let’s take a closer look at the people that embrace new trends.

They were:

  • curious and thus be informed about new trends 
  • approached new trends with an open and playful mindset to test and see how it could be used to their benefit and/or the benefit of others (think of Facebook’s GoFundMe Pages, Facebook’s special interest communities)  

With using social media in certain ways by a variety of people new trends evolved, like social media marketing, influencer marketing to mention only a few examples. 

So, how do trends actually evolve?

Trends are the results of anticipating how the future could look like. The more people talk about it, the more “normal” a topic becomes to us, we can easier accept it as the “new normal” until it becomes our reality.  

To be able to use trends for creating new opportunities for yourself two things are important:

  • You need to know trends to turn them into an opportunity for yourself.
  • You need to know how to use trend and market research results as they will show you where people already invest in. (aka: Hire your expertise, invest in your project idea, etc.) 

How can you use trends for your own positioning?

You can either set new trends in your area of expertise yourself or you are forefront to implement trends in your field or department (Digitization & Automatization of processes in your department or cross-departments).


STEP 1

How to find trends aka the “What” people talk about and are ready to invest in:

  • Use google search to look for topics that are being discussed in your industry, your field of expertise or anything that could have an impact on your industry. You can get even better insights to the quality of your search by using browser extensions that show you how often a certain keyword was searched for.
  • Look up blogs, networks, conference topics, social media channels, podcasts and (online) magazines to get an idea on what people talk about and the influencers behind topics.
  • Look up platforms where people can ask their questions and check questions related to your topic or anything that may impact your industry.
  • Go to amazon.com and amazon.de as well as books recommended by the New York Times or other Newspapers and magazines to get an idea what is talked about. 

STEP 2

Market research within the company you work for or want to work for (aka: during a job interview.)

Understand the company and its pains and wants:

  • Listen to the people around you as well as the people in your network.
  • What are the challenges of a company?
  • What are the gaps to the internal/external customer?
  • What are the results a company or a boss wants?
  • What would need to happen, in their view, to change the status quo.  

STEP 3

Match your trend research and your research within a company with your unique value to a company.

Here are a few questions that get you started in preparing to pitch your idea:

  • What is your idea to solve the problem?
  • What is your role in solving the problem?
  • How would you solve the problem?
  • What is the benefit for the company?
  • Why are you the #1 problem solver a company should promote or hire to implement your new idea?  

From there, choose your form of pitch and outline your actual presentation or talk. I am going into much more detail on how to structure your pitch and make yourself the #1 solution a company is looking to hire or promote for implementing those new ideas and initiatives in CAREER MOMENTUM.

Create New Career Opportunities (You Are Passionate About) In Only 3 Steps

I recently spoke with one of my mentees. Based on the application she had filled out to work with me, I knew she was looking for a new opportunity within her company but she wasn’t sure how she could achieve that.  

On the call, she told me about a new project she is driving on top of her regular work. Now, that she was almost finished rolling-out the project to part of the target market successfully, customers asked for when her companies’ solution will be available in their regions too. On top, she sees an internal push to secure market shares for her company.  

I asked if she likes the project and she told me how excited she is about the topic itself, the people she has to work with all over the organization, and that it feels like the perfect extension to her skills and experience.  

I asked her how passionate she is about the results she creates for her customers and about getting her company in the game of securing those important market shares. She looked at me and after a brief moment she told me how passionate she actually was about that topic.  

I asked if she knew this could be the new opportunity she was looking for if she stepped into being the project leader and made the solution available to customers worldwide.

We then talked about how you can create new opportunities for yourself in 3 steps: 

1. Market research.

  • Know market trends and topics that could become trending in your industry or become relevant to your organization.
  • Find the gaps between your organization, your department or team and internal and/or external customers.
  • Know your value to an organization including the benefits you offer to a company or to your current employer. Ask yourself
  • "Why should they choose me to close that gap?" and "Why am I the right person to solve that problem?" 

2. Make an offer.

  • Communicate your solution to closing the gap with a clear outline of what you want to achieve for the company.
  • How will the company and customers benefit from your solution?
  • Which support do you need to achieve your desired result for the company?
  • Clarify the role you need to have to deliver the desired result successfully.
  • Outline the project and be transparent about when you want to have reached important milestones. 

3. Pitch yourself. 

  • Make yourself and your expertise part of the solution. Stories that position you as the expert or leader you are should be a consistent and entertaining part over your entire presentation.
  • Sell your knowledge and expertise with confidence.
  • Think of possible objections to your expertise and handle them with your expert-positioning throughout the presentation. 

And if you don’t get a YES on your idea?

Be persistent if you are really passionate about your idea and truly believe in the life changing result for the customer and the company. Continue your expert positioning on a daily basis and share your passion using every opportunity you have. Come back from different angles always showing the benefit to the company if they were to implement your idea. The process from marketing to closing a deal, which is a YES to your idea in your case, is a process that needs time. Expect, that you will need several touchpoints with your audience.

And if you still don’t get a YES? 

Move on to create a new opportunity if it doesn’t fully resonate with you. You still gained experience on putting yourself out there and will do so with greater ease in the future. Continue building your expert positioning, understand your target audience even better to find a better hook for the next time, be fond on market and customer needs and gaps within the company to build your selling arguments.  

Sometimes we wait for new opportunities to be presented to us on a silver tray. Instead, it is on us to step into that leadership mindset and create new opportunities for ourselves and the company we work for. Because, if you create opportunities for the company and make yourself part of the solution, you already created new opportunities for yourself.

Facebook Pixel To measure our conversion rates, our website uses the visitor activity pixel of Facebook, Facebook Inc., 1601 S. California Ave, Palo Alto, CA 94304, USA („Facebook“). This tool allows the tracking of page visitors after they have been linked to the website of the provider after clicking on a Facebook ad. Among other things, MailChimp is a service that can be deployed to organise and analyse the sending of newsletters. Whenever you enter data for the purpose of subscribing to a newsletter (e.g. your e-mail address), the information is stored on MailChimp servers in the United States.  

MailChimp is in possession of a certification that is in compliance with the „EU-US-Privacy-Shield.“ The „Privacy-Shield“ is a compact between the European Union (EU) and the United States of America (USA) that aims to warrant the compliance with European data protection standards in the United States.  

With the assistance of the MailChimp tool, we can analyse the performance of our newsletter campaigns. If you open an e-mail that has been sent through the MailChimp tool, a file that has been integrated into the e-mail (a so-called web-beacon) connects to MailChimp’s servers in the United States. As a result, it can be determined whether a newsletter message has been opened and which links the recipient possibly clicked on. Technical information is also recorded at that time (e.g. the time of access, the IP address, type of browser and operating system). This information cannot be allocated to the respective newsletter recipient. Their sole purpose is the performance of statistical analyses of newsletter campaigns. The results of such analyses can be used to tailor future newsletters to the interests of their recipients more effectively.

To ensure that fonts used on this website are uniform, this website uses so-called Web Fonts provided by Google. When you access a page on our website, your browser will load the required web fonts into your browser cache to correctly display text and fonts.

9. Our social media appearances

Data processing through social networks

We maintain publicly available profiles in social networks. The individual social networks we use can be found below. Social networks such as Facebook, Google+ etc. can generally analyse your user behaviour comprehensively if you visit their website or a website with integrated social media content (e.g. like buttons or banner ads).

When you visit our social media pages, numerous data protection-relevant processing operations are triggered. In detail: If you are logged in to your social media account and visit our social media page, the operator of the social media portal can assign this visit to your user account.

Under certain circumstances, your personal data may also be recorded if you are not logged in or do not have an account with the respective social media portal. Storage time

The data collected directly from us via the social media presence will be deleted from our systems as soon as the purpose for their storage lapses, you ask us to delete it, you revoke your consent to the storage or the purpose for the data storage lapses. Stored cookies remain on your device until you delete them. Mandatory statutory provisions - in particular, retention periods - remain unaffected.

MEET YOUR CONSULTANT

Bettina Buhr is a personal branding consultant to professional women, who want to increase their visibility and create quality career opportunities.

She has a background in economics, organizational psychology and communications, gained experience in employer branding, talent assessment, and recruiting before she worked for a big international company in Germany and the U.S. as a senior communications expert with a strong focus on leadership branding.

On the side, she built her career as a rock-climber, went on her first expedition at age 22 to Kyrgyzstan, and travelled the world while climbing and having a corporate job. She always sold her mix of experience to pursue the professional career she wanted.

In 2014, Bettina went on maternity leave. Only 4 months later, she started her first business in the U.S. followed by her consulting business in 2017 – an extension to having mentored dozens of women for the past 15 years.

How is the structure of the program?

This program is an intense program of 12 weeks with a focus to implement what you will learn right away. Depending on where you are in the process of your positioning at work and creating significant results meaningful to your employer, you will need this time frame to build your confidence and make lasting changes to your communication style.  

During the program, we will have one 90-min video-call per week where we will work through your work effectiveness, determine your unique value and provide you with the methods to build your expert or leadership status in your daily communication and you will learn how to present and pitch your ideas and your expertise so you get more Yes's. You will have unlimited voxer access to Bettina for your questions between calls so you make the best possible progress during our time together.

What is the investment?

This depends on your individual situation at work and where you are in taking control over your career and brand development. On average our clients pay 3600,- EUR for this career-changing program. There are payment plans available upon request.

Can this be reimbursed from my employer?

How much time do I need to set aside for this?

Depending on your personal situation and where you are in your career and personal brand development, an average of 2-3 hours is needed per week. You will definitley need this time in the first couple weeks, when you determine your value to your company or a potential employer as this involves research and looking at your life and past experience.  

All other calls focus on providing you the knowledge and methods to build your authority on a daily basis, develop a custom-tailored networking and mentoring strategy for you as well as learning to present with conviction and pitch and sell your expertise as the #1 solution to your employer.  

We focus on your day-to-day implementation of what you learn on the calls.

Can I do a shorter program?

This program will be 100% customized to you and your situtation. You may go for a shorter time together or even longer. We will focus on what you need to make the changes you want to your career.

I need a career change, but don't know which direction to go?

Absolutely! We will focus on your unique talents, skills and passions and look at how you can bring those to live by matching them with global and business trends so you know exactly how you can best add value to an employer ro even start your own business.

What languages do you offer for the calls?

Bettina is German and has lived in the U.S. for 5 years. You can work with Bettina in ENGLISH or GERMAN.
